Before Midnight
I’ve been having dreams I’m waking up. Without fail, every night, I have been dreaming that my life is the dream and my dream is my life. It is quite confusing and I wish it would stop.
Grilled cheese sandwiches can be cut into halves or quarters. If you cut from end to end the halves are rectangles and the quarters are squares. If you cut from corner to corner the result is always triangles.
“What’re you thinking about?”
“Nothing. But I’m not not thinking about anything. I’m thinking about Nothing.”
Last night I watched Before Midnight and most people say that’s the worst of the Before Trilogy. And maybe it is. Some go as far as to say they wish the third one was never made. And I get it, because in a lot of ways it ruins the first two but I think it’s because it is disillusioning and it can be nice to live inside of romantic illusions. Before Midnight breaks the illusion but it’s still romantic I think—maybe even more romantic than the first two in a lot of ways… in that way. There’s fight. They fight.
I was wondering if the goats they saw on their walk were written into the script or if it was a beautiful coincidence. They were written in, actually. Are best things in life are intentional? I can’t quite tell what I want the answer to that question to be.
This week felt like a test and I can’t tell if I passed or if I failed or if I failed and then begged my professor for extra credit to save my grade. And sure, professors grow tired of begging, but it’s funny… in high school, our teachers made us think that college professors would be so unforgiving, but college professors are actually much more forgiving than high school teachers.
If you’re on the right path, life gets increasingly forgiving, I think. It becomes more about the soul than obedience. You see, the more you're reaching for, the more likely you are to fail. Those of us reaching are always on the verge of failure. We have to forgive, so that when the time comes, we are able to forgive ourselves.
The only proof I have of this theory is that God is the most forgiving of all.
Quotes I enjoyed from Certified Copy:
“Cemeteries are full of indispensable men”
“Children state the obvious, we tell them off. But we get the exact same thing from, I don’t know, a philosopher or a writer we think it’s wonderful.”
If you’re lethargic and exhausted you might as well have stayed in bed. If you’re not awake you’re not awake, it’s that simple.
I’m awake in my dreams… isn’t that kind of funny?
